Astyanax aff. fasciatus Cuvier, 1819 (Teleostei; Characidae): evidences of a species complex in the upper rio Tibagi basin (Paraná, Brazil) Neotropical Ichthyology
Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Shibatta,Oscar Akio; Gross,Maria Claudia; Schneider,Carlos Henrique; Almeida,Mara Cristina de; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos.
Four populations of Astyanax aff. fasciatus of the upper rio Tibagi (municipal district of Ponta Grossa, Paraná State, Brazil), had their karyotypes and morphometry analyzed. The cytogenetic data show the occurrence of distinct karyotypes (cytotypes), here named cytotype A, with 2n=48 chromosomes (6m+18sm+14st+10a), cytotype B, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a) and cytotype C, with 2n=50 chromosomes (8m+18sm+14st+10a). The distribution pattern of the constitutive heterochromatin was very similar between cytotypes A and B, but diverged in relation to cytotype C. Distinct cytotypes may occur in sympatry in the upper rio Tibagi region, with the exception of the Furna 2 sample, which presents cytotype A exclusively. In addition, a specimen with 2n=49...

Chromosome Mapping and Molecular Characterization of the Tc1/Mariner Element in Rineloricaria (Siluriformes: Loricariidae) BABT
Primo,Cleberson Cezario; Glugoski,Larissa; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Nogaroto,Viviane.
ABSTRACT The Tc1/Mariner sequence was isolated and mapped on chromosomes aiming to verify the association of this transposable element (TE) and chromosomal rearrangements in Rineloricaria. Cytogenetic analysis showed that Tc1/Mariner does not co-localize with chromosomal fusion points, in addition the analysis revealed intense molecular degeneration in its DNA sequence.

Comparative cytogenetics among populations of Astyanax altiparanae (Characiformes, Characidae, Incertae sedis) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Ferreira Neto,Maressa; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Camargo,Edemar Furquim de; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Moreira-Filho,Orlando.
Cytogenetic data are presented for Astyanax altiparanae populations from three Brazilian hydrographic systems. The chromosomal data obtained in A. altiparanae support the hypothesis of diploid number conservation. However, small differences in the karyotype formula and number of nucleolar organizer regions were observed in these populations. The apparent karyotypical similarity among the studied populations strongly suggests a close relationship among them with some chromosomal divergences due to gene flow restriction.

Comparative cytogenetics among species of the Astyanax scabripinnis complex: evolutionary and biogeographical inferences Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Noleto,Rafael Bueno; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Moreira-Filho,Orlando; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos.
Karyotype data are presented for distinct species of the genus Astyanax from four rivers belonging to three different hydrographic basins of the State of Paraná, Brazil (Verde River - Tibagi basin, Açungui River - Ribeira basin, and Santo Antônio and Jaguariaíva Rivers - Jaguariaíva basin). Three karyotypic forms were identified, here denominated karyotype A (2n = 50 chromosomes, with 8m+18sm+10st+14a, and thirteen 18S rDNA sites); karyotype B (2n = 50 chromosomes, with 8m+18sm+10st+1f4a, and four 18S rDNA sites); and karyotype C (2n = 48 chromosomes, with 10m+16sm+10st+12a, and eight 18S rDNA sites). The pattern of constitutive heterochromatin was similar among the three karyotypic forms, with few differences. The 5S rDNA corresponds to a synapomorphic...

Comparative Cytogenetics Among Three Sympatric Hypostomus Species (Siluriformes: Loricariidae): An Evolutionary Analysis in a High Endemic Region BABT
Lorscheider,Carla Andreia; Oliveira,Jordana Inácio Nascimento; Dulz,Thais Aparecida; Nogaroto,Viviane; Martins-Santos,Isabel Cristina; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo.
ABSTRACT The karyotypes of three armored catfish species (Loricariidae) from the Iguaçu river, southern of the Brazil, were compared using different techniques: C-banding, Ag-NOR and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), which used 5S and 18S rDNAs and total Cot-1 fraction as probes. Hypostomus commersoni and Hypostomus derbyi presented 2n = 68 chromosomes, with karyotype formulae 12m+12sm+14st+30a and 12m+12sm+10st+34a, respectively; whereas Hypostomus myersi presented 2n = 74 chromosomes and 12m+16sm+12st+34a. The chromosomal localization of the Ag-NORs, 5S and 18S rDNAs differed in number of sites and chromosomal localization among the studied species. The total Cot-1 probe permitted the visualization of the repetitive DNA fraction in karyotypes of...

Comparative cytogenetics of Hoplias malabaricus (Pisces, Erythrinidae): a population analysis in adjacent hydrographic basins Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos.
The chromosomes of specimens from four Hoplias malabaricus populations from headwaters of adjacent river basins at Ponta Grossa, southern Brazil, were investigated using differential staining techniques (C-banding, AgNO3 and CMA3) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with an 18S rDNA probe. The diploid chromosome number in representatives of all four populations was invariably 2n = 42, with karyotypes composed of 12 pairs of metacentrics and 9 pairs of submetacentrics, without heteromorphic sex chromosomes. This kind of karyotype represents cytotype A in regard to cytotypes identified previously in H. malabaricus, exhibiting however, at the same time, some differences in the distribution of constitutive heterochromatin segments and in the locations...

Cytogenetic analysis and chromosomal characteristics of the polymorphic 18S rDNA in the fish Prochilodus lineatus (Characiformes, Prochilodontidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Almeida,Mara Cristina de; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos; Moreira-Filho,Orlando; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira.
We used differential staining techniques (BSG, GTG, AgNO3, DAPI and CMA3 banding) and fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH) with 5S and 18S probes to investigated the karyotypic and cytogenetic chracteristics of Prochilodus lineatus specimens from a population in Vila Velha state park (Parque Estadual de Vila Velha, Ponta Grossa, Paraná state, southern Brazil). The specimens studied showed the same karyotype as that found in other P. lineatus populations, i.e. 2n = 54 biarmed chromosomes (40m + 14 sm) and c-positive heterochromatin preferentially located pericentromerically in all chromosomes. The presence of partial or totally heterochromatic supernumerary chromosomes with numeric intra-individual variation was confirmed in the analyzed population. The...

Cytogenetic analysis of Astylus antis (Perty, 1830) (Coleoptera, Melyridae): Karyotype, heterochromatin and location of ribosomal genes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Mendes-Neto,Ernani de Oliveira; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Campaner,Carlos; Nogaroto,Viviane; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Almeida,Mara Cristina.
Cytogenetic analysis of Astylus antis using mitotic and meiotic cells was performed to characterize the haploid and diploid numbers, sex determination system, chromosome morphology, constitutive heterochromatin distribution pattern and chromosomes carrying nucleolus organizer regions (NORs). Analysis of spermatogonial metaphase cells revealed the diploid number 2n = 18, with mostly metacentric chromosomes. Metaphase I cells exhibited 2n = 8II+Xyp and a parachute configuration of the sex chromosomes. Spermatogonial metaphase cells submitted to C-banding showed the presence of small dots of constitutive heterochromatin in the centromeric regions of nearly all the autosomes and on the short arm of the X chromosome (Xp), as well as an additional band on one of...

Cytogenetics and biogeography: considerations about the natural origin of Hoplias malabaricus (Characiformes, Erythrinidae) on the Iguaçu river BABT
Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Pazza,Rubens; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Margarido,Vladimir Pavan; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos.
Hoplias malabaricus (trahyra) is a widespread fish species over the Neotropical region with diversified inter-populational karyotypes (cytotypes), which may correspond to a species complex. Despite the wide distribution in the South American basins, some authors have questioned its natural origin in the Iguaçu river, an important Brazilian river basin which is characterized by several endemic fish species. We have analyzed the karyotype of H. malabaricus from different collection sites of this river, by conventional and banding methods. Our results, in addition to our previous data concerning geographic distribution of the cytotypes, contribute to better understand the origin of H. malabaricus on the Iguaçu river, reinforcing the proposition that it is a...

Cytogenetics and DNA barcode reveal an undescribed Apareiodon species (Characiformes: Parodontidae) Genet. Mol. Biol.
Santos,Emanoel Oliveira dos; Deon,Geize Aparecida; Almeida,Rafael Bonfim de; Oliveira,Ezequiel Aguiar de; Nogaroto,Viviane; Silva,Hugmar Pains da; Pavanelli,Carla Simone; Cestari,Marta Margarete; Bertollo,Luiz Antonio Carlos; Moreira-Filho,Orlando; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo.
Abstract Parodontidae is a small group of fish and some species are particularly difficult to identify due to the lack of sufficiently consistent morphological traits. Cytogenetically, the species possess 2n = 54 chromosomes and are either sex-homomorphic or sex-heteromorphic (regarding its chromosomes). We evaluated data on color, tooth morphology, cytogenetics, and mitochondrial markers (COI) in Apareiodon specimens from the Aripuanã River (Amazon basin) and the results were compared to other congeneric taxa. Morphological results show an overlap of body color and tooth morphology to other known Apareiodon. The cytogenetics data showed that the 2n = 54 chromosomes, 50 m/sm + 4 st and, a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system in Apareiodon sp. are common to other...

Dispersion of transposable elements and multigene families: Microstructural variation in Characidium (Characiformes: Crenuchidae) genomes Genet. Mol. Biol.
Pucci,Marcela Baer; Nogaroto,Viviane; Moreira-Filho,Orlando; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo.
Abstract Eukaryotic genomes consist of several repetitive DNAs, including dispersed DNA sequences that move between chromosome sites, tandem repeats of DNA sequences, and multigene families. In this study, repeated sequences isolated from the genome of Characidium gomesi were analyzed and mapped to chromosomes in Characidium zebra and specimens from two populations of C. gomesi. The sequences were transposable elements (TEs) named retroelement of Xiphophorus (Rex); multigene families of U2 small nuclear RNA (U2 snRNA); and histones H1, H3, and H4. Sequence analyses revealed that U2 snRNA contains a major portion corresponding to the Tx1-type non-LTR retrotransposon Keno, the preferential insertion sites of which are U2 snRNA sequences. All histone...

Karyotype variability in neotropical catfishes of the family Pimelodidae (Teleostei: Siluriformes) Neotropical Ichthyology
Moraes Neto,Américo; Silva,Maelin da; Matoso,Daniele Aparecida; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo; Almeida,Mara Cristina de; Collares-Pereira,Maria João; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira.
Karyotypic data are presented for four species of fish belonging to the Pimelodidae family. These species show a conserved diploid number, 2n = 56 chromosomes, with different karyotypic formulae. The analyzed species showed little amount of heterochromatin located preferentially in the centromeric and telomeric regions of some chromosomes. The nucleolus organizer regions activity (Ag-NORs) and the chromosomal location of ribosomal genes by fluorescent in situ hybridization (FISH), with 18S and 5S probes, showing only one chromosome pair marked bearer of ribosomal genes, the only exception was Pimelodus britskii that presented multiple NORs and syntenic location of the 18S and 5S probes. Non-Robertsonian events, as pericentric inversion and NORs duplication...

Sex chromosome system ZZ/ZW in Apareiodon hasemani Eigenmann, 1916 (Characiformes, Parodontidae) and a derived chromosomal region Genet. Mol. Biol.
Bellafronte,Elisangela; Schemberger,Michelle Orane; Artoni,Roberto Ferreira; Moreira Filho,Orlando; Vicari,Marcelo Ricardo.
Parodontidae fish show few morphological characteristics for the identification of their representatives and chromosomal analyses have provided reliable features for determining the interrelationships in this family. In this study, the chromosomes of Apareiodon hasemani from the São Francisco River basin, Brazil, were analyzed and showed a karyotype with 2n = 54 meta/submetacentric chromosomes, and a ZZ/ZW sex chromosome system. The study revealed active NORs located on pair 11 and additional 18S rDNA sites on pairs 7 and 22. The 5S rDNA locus was found in pair 14. It showed a pericentric inversion regarding the ancestral condition. The satellite DNA pPh2004 was absent in the chromosomes of A. hasemani, a shared condition with most members of Apareiodon....
